An Unrivaled Following, Waiting to Be Activated

Following Argentina's 2022 FIFA World Cup victory, Lionel Messi had cemented his position as football's greatest player. In India, his popularity among football fans was unrivalled — a massive, untapped market with limited activation. Messi and his management team wanted to explore how this extraordinary following could be converted into a long-term business and brand-building opportunity in India.

Adidas, Messi's longest-standing commercial partner, was expanding its range of Messi-branded apparel internationally. India — one of the world's largest consumer markets and an important growth market for Adidas — had been identified as a strategic priority. The question was how to translate social media following into stadium attendance, brand engagement, and sustainable commercial returns.

Through our discussions with Messi's representatives, and drawing on our previous experience bringing Pelé to India in 2015, 1966 Americas had the market knowledge, relationships, and operational experience needed to help make an ambitious return to India a reality.

Four Cities, Three Days

Working with an experienced Indian promoter who had previously brought Pelé, Madonna, Ronaldinho, and other international figures to the country, we developed an intensive itinerary covering four major cities in three days, set for December 2025. The objective was to maximize national exposure, fan participation, and commercial returns for all parties.

We selected Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi as the host cities. The program combined private VIP meet-and-greets with large-scale stadium events incorporating football, music, dance, youth participation, and local culture. The promoter assembled the necessary funding through corporate sponsorships, ticket sales, and media partnerships.

1966 Americas played a significant role in structuring and presenting the tour, negotiating fees and commercial responsibilities, and coordinating the scheduling and logistics required to deliver ten major engagements across four cities in three days. Our work included a pre-tour reconnaissance visit to evaluate venues, develop detailed operational plans, establish security protocols, identify key local contacts, and create contingency plans for Messi's visit in December 2025.

An Exceptionally Ambitious Undertaking

The Messi G.O.A.T. India Tour required close coordination among Messi and his international team, the tour promoter, corporate partners, the Government of India, state and city authorities, venue operators, and multiple security agencies.

The stadium events attracted combined audiences of more than 150,000 people across Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi. Demand for the private VIP meet-and-greets exceeded the available capacity in every city.

Local charities and youth football organizations participated in the stadium programs, generating financial support and grassroots development opportunities for teenage girls and boys.

A media partnership with Sony LIV — one of India's largest sports and entertainment streaming platforms — brought live coverage of the tour to audiences throughout India, with additional content made available through video on demand.

The visit also created unique meetings with some of India's leading business and cultural figures, including cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and internationally celebrated actor Shah Rukh Khan.

Namaste India

The tour's most significant digital result was Messi's Namaste India film and Instagram post, with the creative overseen by 1966 Americas — including Messi-branded content filmed at a historic location in Delhi. Released entirely organically through Messi's account, it generated:

  • 123.8 million views

  • 11.1 million likes

The post received 5.5 times as many likes as Messi's pre-tour India announcement and generated more than twice as many shares as comments. It remained one of Messi's most-liked posts and ranked among his three strongest organic posts during the surrounding 12-month period.

Compared with Messi's typical Instagram performance at the time of analysis, Namaste India generated approximately four times the average number of likes and five times the average number of comments — demonstrating the exceptional organic reach and resonance created by the tour.

1966 Americas also supported an Adidas activation released following the tour, extending the commercial value of Messi's India presence beyond the tour dates themselves.

Key Takeaways

Compressed intensity creates maximum impact. A four-city tour across three days — while logistically complex — generated national coverage and fan participation that a longer, more spread-out schedule might not have achieved. The intensity of the experience became a story in itself.

Organic resonance outperforms paid reach. The Namaste India post's extraordinary engagement came entirely from the tour's authenticity and the genuine connection fans felt. The numbers speak to the power of an experience that feels earned rather than promoted.

Local integration amplifies global reach. Partnerships with Indian cultural figures, media platforms, and youth organizations transformed the tour from a celebrity visit into a moment that mattered within India's own cultural conversation.

A global fan base is only valuable if it can be activated — and activated in ways that feel authentic to both the athlete and the audience. The right strategy, the right partners, and the right market can turn unprecedented enthusiasm into lasting commercial and cultural impact.
